Allow me to tell you a little bit about why I think that destruction can be something positive, too.
When most of us hear the word „destruction“ the connotation that most of us have is rather negative. Usually, we won’t think „destruction? Amazing, more please!“ And on many occasions, destruction is something horrible, like in relation to natural disasters, loss of home, and many more incidents.
BUT – it can also be something positive, depending on the situation. This realisation came to me during my yoga teacher training, when we talked about the Trimurti, the triple deity of supreme divinity in Hinduism: Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma. Brahma is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver, and Shiva is the destroyer (among many other roles that they have). In their roles, they look over the circle of life, which is creation, preservation, and ending in destruction – with many repetitions in one life. While this might look like the circle of life as in birth, life, and death, it also goes a lot deeper than that.
When I heard about the Trimutri, I was really surprised and a little bit confused that destruction was part of the triple deity, because to me it seemed like something far from divine. But the more I thought about it, the more sense it made. Because we need destruction to create something now, to start over, to start fresh even. For example, we fall in love, we are in love and we fall out of love. And while heartbreak is terrible, it might – in the long run – make space for someone else, give us time to find ourselves. Or say, you get a job, you stay in that job and then you get let go. Whilst unemployment is not easy, it might give you time to pursue another career, find another job – because nothing or no one that lets you go was appreciating you enough. It was a blessing in disguise.
Now I know that sometimes that formula might just not apply, and that is absolutely OK. I don’t think destruction is only something positive and even in more „milder“ situations, it can still cause a lot of pain, distress, and anxiety. Sometimes, however, we realise after we have successfully dealt with destruction in our lives, a lot of us then see it as something positive, that opened another door for them. Perhaps someday you might feel the same way!
